Is tanning alright while pregnant?

You have just found out that you are expecting a baby.  Many things go through your mind about what may harm your little one.  A popular question has been, “Is it alright to partake in tanning while pregnant?”  We recommend that the first person you speak to is your doctor.  They know you the best and can advise you if it is alright to do any tanning while pregnant.

To date, there are no studies on the effects of tanning beds or tanning while pregnant.  The UV rays from the lights in tanning beds never reach your unborn child so there is no risk to your baby.  Most doctors recommend that you don’t do anything that will raise your body’s temperature during your first trimester such as hot tubs, saunas or even tanning beds.

Some doctors do allow their patients to use them in the second and third trimester however for very short periods of time only.  Tanning while pregnant may be fine for short sessions but remember staying cool and hydrated is always better for you.  Make sure to consult with your doctor before taking part in any of these activities.
